The legendary Patrouille des Glaciers (PdG) is regarded as one of the toughest and most challenging ski mountaineering races in the world. The race will be held for the 15th time from 25 to 28 April 2012. This will be the fourth time - after 2006, 2008 and 2010 - that Swisscom is to partner the Swiss Army, ensuring a seamless GSM network along the entire 53-kilometre route from Zermatt to Verbier.

To succeed in this race, participants need to be experienced mountaineers and in good physical and mental condition. They also need to be well prepared for difficult conditions and be good team players, since the task is to master the challenge in teams of three (patrols).

Along the entire 53-kilometre route from Zermatt to Verbier, a temporary GSM mobile network with three temporary base stations will be installed on Cab. Dent Blanche (3,507 m), Cab. La Barma (2,458 m) and at the top station of the Mont Fort cable car (3,308 m).
