Why we developed the translation add-on for Statamic

Our own experience of maintaining a multilingual website and the associated time-consuming process of manual translation inspired us to develop a solution that would significantly reduce this effort. 

Our goal was to provide an efficient and effortless way to translate content into the desired languages directly in our favorite CMS, Statamic. No more tedious switching back and forth between original text, translation tool and CMS.

Without further ado, we created an add-on for Statamic with which texts in the CMS can be translated automatically and with just one click. Initially only with the Deepl API, in the meantime and at the request of the dev community, the translation API from Google Cloud can also be used.

DeepL and Google provide lists of currently supported languages:

Of course, Statamic allows you to edit the automatically translated texts so that the high-quality machine translations from DeepL can be adapted to your own liking.

Test phase and licensing

The add-on can be used free of charge during the development phase. For use in a productive system, the addon can be purchased in the Marketplace from Statamic. What is invaluable for content editors is available for 39$ in the Marketplace. Of course, you also need an API key, either for the DeepL API or for the Google Cloud.

Translations via add-on directly in Statamic - the solution for more speed when translating

The development of the add-on has definitely paid off and has already saved us a lot of time and nerves when translating content - whether for customers or for our own website. What's more, the consistency of the automated translation means that fewer errors creep in.

If you have technical questions, change requests or bugs to report about the addon, the best way to do this is via GitHub. For example, there have already been requests to integrate the ChatGPT API. We are of course thinking about how we can further develop the add-on in a meaningful way - whether with artificial intelligence or not remains to be seen.
