Better user experiences thanks to optimized texts

The text in digital products is often given too little attention, yet it's crucial to the success of apps, web apps, and websites. Wherever users interact with digital products, words are generally required for the interaction to be successful. Imagine, for example, a ticket machine without text – it would be difficult to understand how to get the right ticket.

The right words in the right places ensure that users can find their way around and that the digital product is easy to use.

What is UX writing?

UX stands for user experience, i.e. the experience users have when interacting with a (digital) product. A good user experience involves not only beautiful design and an easy-to-use interface but also easily understandable text. UX writing optimizes the written elements of the user experience, such as:

  • Buttons

  • Labels

  • Error and success messages

  • Onboarding text

  • Calls to Action

The goal of UX writing is to design these text elements, also known as "microcopy", in such a way that they're clear, easy to read and helpful for users, while at the same time taking into account the tone (brand voice) of the respective brand or company. UX writing aims to make interaction with a digital product feel as natural as possible. For instance, users should understand exactly what happens when they click a button, and error messages should inform them about a problem in a way that's appropriate for the target audience.

UX writing as a key success factor for your digital product

Although microcopy often consists "only" of individual words, small text modules, or short phrases, these elements are incredibly important for helping users navigate a digital product.

UX writing removes obstacles, builds trust, and guides users to their desired goal. The right messages in the appropriate tone at the right place help avoid errors and frustration, contributing to a positive experience when using your digital product.

In addition to a better experience for users, UX writing can also promote engagement, lead to fewer support requests, and increase conversions. The following example illustrates how vital the optimization of microcopy is for the success of digital products:

During a hotel search on Google, changing the wording from "Book a room" to "Check availability" resulted in a 17% increase in the engagement rate. A seemingly small and perhaps initially insignificant change in microcopy can therefore have a major impact on user behavior.
